There are a zillion options for hunters that are shopping for a new trail camera. They are forced to decide between Moultrie, Cuddeback, Bushnell, homebrew homemade cameras, and the list goes on. So where do you start when you are searching for a new trail camera??

There are many qualities that you should be looking for when you are shopping for a trail camera. The first thing you should do is read real hunter trail camera comparison. When you read consumer reviews you should not take one into account. You should review them all and try to take away a collective recommendation. The trail camera comparison should include trigger speed, picture quality, ease of use, customer service, reliability, and flash range.

Just keep an open mind as you search through all the trail camera reviews. Many times people have a bad experience and must tell the world.

We are just weeks away from August and you are actually starting to think about deer season. Something begins to stir in hunters that can not be quited by fishing or any other summer sports. Many of you are now going back out to check out the deer lease and make sure everything is still in tact. High on you list of priorities should be setting out your trail cameras. Now is the time to scout with cameras and find out what trophy bucks made it through last season. If you are a member of a hunting club, you can use the pictures to determine what deer are real “shooters” and what deer should be left for next season.

early season doe and fawn

In late summer you should place your trail cameras on watering and grazing sources. A watering hole is a great place to get some fabulous pictures. Old farm ponds and creek crossings are prime spots especially in areas that have not had much rain. You should also set a few trail cameras on field edges and pasture edges or over looking and active deer feeder. During the time deer are targeting tender green browse and agriculture like soy beans.

Trail cameras have a variety of uses and are really only limited by your imagination. It is basically a camera that is operated by a passive infrared sensor(PIR). The PIR can detect the heat from an animals body as compared to the temperature of the surroundings. Once the PIR senses heat in motion it triggers the camera to take a snap shot of the heat source. If daylight is low or after sundown, a flash will be activated to expose the picture. You now have the option of choosing an incandescent or infrared flash. The advantage of the infrared flash is that it will spook the subject much less. A majority of trail cameras are also capable of taking still pictures and short video clips.

dirty deer caught in the act

As i said earlier, trail cameras have a ton of uses. The Moultrie M60 Digital Trail Camera is equipped with a time lapse feature. This enables the user to secure the camera over looking a construction site, garden, flower, etc.. and create a sequence of events and catalog progress. You can hang the camera beside a bird feeder to get close ups of your favorite birds. I have even seen people set up trail cameras on the edge of a pond to get pictures of ducks. Another very exciting placement of a camera is over animal remains or carcass. You could see very elusive animals like cougars, coyotes and bobcats. Another common use of trail cameras is for security. More and More people are using them to monitor remote home sites, hunting camps and storage sheds.
